About vascular anomalies

There are two different entities within the group of vascular anomalies: vascular tumors and vascular malformations. Infantile hemangioma is by far the most common vascular tumor but within the group there are also other rare vascular tumors. Most are benign but there are also malignant vascular tumors. Vascular malformations are the result of congenital errors in development of the vascular system that can affect capillaries, veins, arteries and lymphatics. Most often only one type of vessel is affected but there are complex syndromes where two or more malformations coexist. Although there are a few inherited forms of vascular malformations, most are sporadic and due to somatic mutations early during embryo development.
